Our trip to Jersey from June, 14th to June, 22th in 2008.

Friday, June 20

Le Dehus Dolmen, Guernsey
Today we want to visit the smaller island Guernsey next to Jersey. We start early, again with the catamaran, and head to St. Peter Port. As on Jersey, rental cars are quite valuable since you mustn’t leave the island. More over, speed limit is set at 45 miles/hour which also limits the risk of accidents. Locals can spot the rental cars from great distances since all rental cars are marked by a huge “H” on the car’s front and back. We want to go on a tour and see the most interesting sights.

First we drive to the island’s northeast and visit a Neolithic passage tomb: Le Dehus Dolmen. Since the town doesn’t seem to attract many tourists, is a bit more complicated to find it, yet, we can enjoy the place for ourselves. If you look very closely, you’ll see a carved depiction of a human in the passage tomb’s ceiling, but it’s only visible when the light comes from the sight. Our conclusion: come and find it out for yourselves.

Golfcourt between Martello-Towers, Guernsey

We continue our trip to the north coast. Between the so called Martello Towers, which can be found almost everywhere on Jersey, you can play golf. We’ve seen many signs warning you to watch out for flying golf balls.

Saumarez Park, Guernsey
We keep going to the island’s Saumarez Park, a much-liked destination for many locals with children. The extensive park offers a shadowy rest. You can lie on the grass and have a picnic. If you look closely, you’ll find a bistro, which reminds us of a beer tent, that offers delicious snacks at valuable prices.

Harbour and Cornet Castle, St. Peter Port, Guernsey

As Jersey, Guernsey has its own currency, Guernsey Pounds. From time to time, some people on Guernsey would also take Jersey pounds. But if you’re outside the Channel Islands, e.g. Great Britain, you have to pay with British pounds.

Our trip leads us to Petit Bot Bay in the island’s south. After a short stay, we drive back to the island’s capital and look for the former house of Victor Hugo. We find 2 houses on the same street, he moved houses during his stay on the island. From this part of the city, which is higher than the city itself, you have a wonderful view over the harbor and Castle Cornet.

Pub at St. Peter Port, Guernsey

We don’t have time to step by at a pub, we must go back, return our car and get the ferry. When we arrive Jersey, we go to “Dix Neuf” one more time, since we liked it that much.
